Even though the Pixel 9 lineup was heavily leaked, Google might yet have some surprises in store for its August 13 presentation.
Google’s earlier-than-expected Pixel hardware event is just around the corner — it’s scheduled for Tuesday, August 13th. Thanks to the relentless flow of leaks that have emerged over the past few weeks, we have a pretty good idea of what to expect.
Google has already confirmed that it’s launching the Pixel 9 and the Pixel 9 Pro Fold, but the company may have some other surprises in store, including the Buds Pro 2 and maybe even the Pixel Watch 3.
Here’s a roundup of everything we know so far.
Google Pixel 9 lineup adds a smaller Pro option
Google is anticipated to release the Pixel Pro in two sizes: a larger 6.8-inch device and a smaller 6.3-inch model, in addition to the Pixel 9. The telephoto camera was previously exclusive to the larger phone model, thus this will be the first time the Pro capabilities are offered in two distinct sizes.
There will be some noticeable design changes with the Pixel 9 and 9 Pro, as seen in the Google-shared image and other leaks. The device’s back now features a rounder camera module that protrudes, giving both the Pro and basic variants smoother edges.
According to a leaked spec sheet from OnLeaks, the G4 Tensor chip—which is anticipated to include minor upgrades—and 16GB of RAM will be included with the Pixel 9 Pro variants. In the
meantime, the same processor with a 6.3-inch display and 12GB of RAM is anticipated for the entry-level Pixel 9. The 128GB of storage that comes standard with both phones may be upgraded to 1TB with the Pro model.
The leaked spec sheet for the Pixel 9 shows that it has a 50-megapixel primary camera, a 48MP ultrawide lens, and a 10.5MP selfie camera. The cameras on both devices will probably receive
some upgrades as well. A 42MP selfie camera and three cameras on the Pixel 9 Pro are also revealed by the source.
The Exynos 5400 modem from Samsung is another rumoured inclusion to the Pixel 9 lineup. It may enable a satellite SOS capability like to that of the most recent iPhone models. Google may
also include an ultrasonic fingerprint sensor in the Pixel 9 series, according to a report from Android Authority. This would presumably address some of the problems users have been
experiencing with the current optical under-display sensor.
The Pixel 9 Pro Fold gets taller and slimmer
Google intends to offer more phones this summer in addition to those three. Additionally, it is preparing for the launch of the Pixel 9 Pro Fold, its next-generation foldable device.
The Pixel 9 Pro Fold seems to be larger and thinner than the one from last year. Additionally reflecting such design modification is the squircle-shaped camera housing on
The Pixel 9 Pro Fold is expected to have an 8-inch inner screen and a 6.3-inch cover display when it comes to specifications. That is bigger than the 5.8-inch outside and 7.6-inch inner displays of the original Pixel Fold. Additional rumours indicate that the Pixel 9 Pro Fold, which measures 5.1 mm when unfolded and 10.5 mm when folded, will be thinner than the Pixel 9 Pro Fold. When unfolded, it can also rest flat entirely.
According to a leaked specs sheet, the Pixel 9 Pro Fold will include 16GB of RAM in addition to the same G4 Tensor CPU as the other smartphones in the lineup. Together with a 48MP primary camera, a 10.5MP ultrawide lens, and a 10.8MP telephoto sensor on the rear, it might also feature a 10MP front-facing camera.
Google brings more AI to the Pixel
It comes as no surprise that Google is attempting to integrate AI into its phones, given the efforts made by Apple and Samsung in this regard. Among other things, a new Pixel Screenshots feature that “helps you save info that you want to remember later — like events, places and more” is hinted at in a series of OnLeaks marketing materials that were compromised.
This is consistent with an earlier leak from Android Police, which claims that you will be able to search through your screenshots by having the function “save and process helpful details” from them. It sounds a lot like Microsoft’s contentious Recall feature, but it seems to only function on screenshots that you manually snap as opposed to scanning the whole device. Together with Circle to Search, the marketing materials also demonstrate an interface with Google’s AI chatbot Gemini. We got a sneak peek at a Pixel 9 feature named “Add Me” through an Android Headlines leak (which has since been removed). It looks like it uses artificial intelligence (AI) to insert someone into a picture who wasn’t there at first. It appears that Google intends to enhance Magic Editor as well, enabling you to alter an image’s backdrop in response to a prompt.
The Pixel Buds Pro 2 brings back the wing tip
Now that the original Pixel Buds Pro have been available for two years, it appears like Google intends to update them. The Pixel Buds Pro 2 include a little wing tip that protrudes from the side of each bud, similar to the “stabiliser arc” on the original Pixel Buds, according to leaked photos from OnLeaks.
Larger grills that complement the hues of the bud and a charging case that seems to have a tiny speaker (maybe to make a sound while utilising Google’s Find My feature?) are two other minor modifications. Expected colour options for the Pixel Buds Pro 2 include grey, white, green, and pink.
Although we don’t know much about the Pixel Buds Pro 2’s specifications, we may have a decent sense of how they will look. A regulatory listing that was discovered earlier this year raises the possibility that the case has a larger 650mAh battery. Apart from that, we can probably anticipate that the Pixel Buds Pro 2 will have the same multipoint capabilities and active noise suppression as its predecessor.
A Pixel Watch 3 with two sizes and bigger screens
Only renders of the Pixel Watch 3 have been released thus far, and they depict a somewhat chunkier-looking device. The Pixel Watch 3 is anticipated to be available in two sizes, 41mm and 45mm, in contrast to its predecessor. Because of its smaller bezels, the 41mm model is rumoured to have a 10% larger screen than its comparably sized predecessor.
Additionally, according to recent reports, both Pixel Watch 3 models will have an ultra wideband processor and a brighter 2,000-nit display, which should improve location tracking accuracy. Additionally, it is reported that the 41mm watch would have a slightly larger 310mAh battery and charge 20% faster than the Pixel Watch 2.
According to leaked marketing materials released by Android Headlines, both sizes may offer up to 24 hours of battery life with the always-on display turned on or up to 36 hours with a new Battery Saver mode. The documents also allude to improved camera controls when pairing with a Pixel phone, support for offline Google Maps, and the option to monitor live feeds from your Nest Cam and Nest Doorbell from your watch.
Anything else?
Google has unveiled its new TV streamer ahead of schedule, while it was anticipated to make its debut at the Pixel hardware event. It may compete with the Apple TV 4K. Along with the new Gemini-powered features in the Google Home app, Google also unveiled the fourth generation Nest Learning Thermostat.
That’s all the information we currently have, but there is still time before Google’s August 13 event, so additional leaks could yet occur.
Update, July 31: Added more suspected Pixel 9 specifications.
